A Look at Creative Entrepreneurship
We’d like to begin our journey with you by laying a foundation of understanding for all who are interested. Here are concise explanations of the basic concepts and practices of creative entrepreneurship:
Creative Entrepreneurship is a field that creates the opportunity for individuals to turn their artistic ideas and craftsmanship into profitable and sustainable businesses. It is the practice of combining a passion for art/creativity with an entrepreneurial spirit and business skills. The product of creative entrepreneurship is ventures centred around the selling of artistic and/or cultural products or services.
Creative Entrepreneurs are artists who merge their creative talent/s with a business mindset. Besides possessing an artistic talent for which they are passionate, creative entrepreneurs often possess a range of entrepreneurial skills which empowers them to create products, services, and experiences that meet a need in the market.
Entrepreneurial Skills of a creative entrepreneur often include the ability to identify a market for their products/services, understand their target consumers’ preferences, develop innovative marketing and distribution strategies, manage finances, negotiate contracts, and build substantial relationships with suppliers, clients, and other stakeholders within their chain of operations.
The Forms of Creative Entrepreneurship varies depending on the unique talent, background, interests, and goals of the creative entrepreneur. Whether their background is in arts, design, fashion, music or film, these professionals can operate independently or run established businesses. Here’s a classification of some of the specific forms creative entrepreneurship may take:
Freelance: Many creative entrepreneurs find themselves in this category. They do not hold long-term employment with a particular firm but are, instead, independent contractors who get paid on a “per-job” basis and can work with several clients simultaneously. For instance, a graphic designer accepting paid logo-design contracts from several clients, a photographer accepting photoshoot bookings from different clients, writers, or web developers, and so forth.
Startups: As artists increasingly recognize the value of their talents and make the necessary investments to attain and master the skills which would allow them to successfully monetize and build real businesses off said talents, they are launching their own startups where they dedicate time to developing new products, services, or experiences that are centred around their creative talents.
Creative Agencies: Maximizing the power of collaboration, some artists are building creative agencies that offer a range of services to clients. These agencies often consist of multiple creatives of diverse talents and specialities. The most common of such agencies offer services such as branding, marketing, and design, etc.
Social Ventures and Not-for-profits: Creative entrepreneurs can also work on building social impact and non-profit ventures solely dedicated to promoting the positive and sustainable growth of society. Artists are launching ventures of this kind through which they can use their creative skills to promote art and culture, provide educational opportunities for creative individuals, and/or support underserved communities.
